The first Monday of December brings with it mixed emotions. On one hand, I watched Home Alone 1 and 2 last week, so I can now justify feeling just that little bit festive. On the other hand, it really is bloody cold outside, and not in a sexy Tom Jones way. However, one irrefutable fact is that it is a super exciting day for new music, with the official release of the Blog Sound of 2013 longlist.
This year we were incredibly chuffed to be invited to be one of 49 blogs involved in the process, organised by Robin of Breaking More Waves and Andy of the Von Pip Musical Express. Each blog is asked to nominate five acts that they feel will/ought to go onto great success and wider exposure next year, with the fifteen most popular choices making up the longlist. A little over 170 acts were nominated across the blogs, with the most popular on the list popping up on 25% of bloggers’ lists, showing the breadth of refreshing talent currently emerging.
Here’s a little on the ethos and thinking behind the competition: “The Blog Sound Poll was first published in 2011. The concept of the poll wasn’t to criticise the established BBC Sound of list, but simply an experiment to see if UK music bloggers could come up with its own list of emerging artists that was more representative of their community and give the artists that were nominated some extra publicity. Indeed the idea was to compliment the BBC list in many ways by providing an alternative to compare and contrast. Last year’s final long list provided some interesting alternatives to the BBC list; most notably it included Alt-J, this year’s Mercury Prize winners, who didn’t feature on the BBC list at all.”
One of our five choices made it onto the longlist- for regular readers it won’t take a lot of detective work to find out who! Let us know what you think, and check out the site later for our reaction to the selection.
Here’s the full list of blogs involved, each of which by the way is superb.
